Sika CarboShear CFRP Strengthening

Slabtec recently completed a structural strengthening project at a School in regional Western Australia, utilising the Sika CarboShear CFRP shear reinforcement system to increase the shear capacity of existing reinforced concrete elements.

The externally bonded carbon fibre solution provided a high‑strength, low‑impact method of upgrading structural performance while minimising disruption to the operational school environment.

Adaptive Reuse – structural strengthening

As buildings evolve over time, structural elements may require strengthening to accommodate increased loads, updated design standards, or deterioration of original construction materials. Slabtec was engaged to provide a targeted strengthening solution for the School to existing reinforced concrete members that required additional shear capacity.

The project utilised a bespoke strengthening solution called Sika CarboShear, which is a preformed carbon fibre shear plate.  The L‑shaped CFRP profiles are externally bonded to reinforced concrete beams using high‑performance epoxy adhesives, enabling engineers to increase shear capacity without extensive structural alteration or demolition.

Why CarboShear?

This was a unique solution to the structural strengthening issues at the school and has been deployed in Australia only a few times.

Sika CarboShear links offer several advantages for strengthening existing structures:

  • High strength‑to‑weight ratio
  • Small profile allows strengthening around existing fixtures and fittings
  • Minimal additional structural weight
  • Rapid installation with minimal disruption

These characteristics make CFRP strengthening particularly well-suited to operational environments such as schools, where maintaining safe access and minimising disruption are critical considerations.

Slabtec Specialist Installation

Slabtec has developed a unique capability for installing the Carbon-Shear system in Australia. Using our specialist knowledge of CFRP, structural elements, and technical design, Slabtec’s team delivered the installation on time and on budget.

These projects highlight how advanced strengthening technologies can extend the life of existing structures while avoiding the environmental and financial costs associated with demolition and reconstruction.

FAQ’s – CarboShear & CFRP

Sika CarboShear is a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening system used to increase the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams and structural elements. The externally bonded carbon fibre links act as additional reinforcement, improving structural performance without adding significant weight or requiring major structural alterations.

Carbon fibre strengthening systems provide a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent durability. Compared with traditional strengthening methods such as steel plates or beam enlargement, CFRP systems are lightweight, non-corroding, and can be installed with minimal disruption to the structure.

Shear strengthening is typically required when a structure must carry higher loads than originally designed, when building use changes, or when deterioration of existing reinforcement reduces structural capacity. CFRP shear reinforcement systems such as Sika CarboShear provide an efficient method of increasing capacity while extending the service life of existing structures.

Yes. One of the key advantages of CFRP strengthening systems is their minimal impact on installation. The lightweight materials and relatively rapid installation process make them well-suited to operational environments such as schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings, where disruption must be minimised.
