Enabling Adaptive Reuse Through Structural Innovation
Slabtec delivered a carbon-fibre and steel strengthening solution to support the adaptive reuse of a former retail tenancy into a state-of-the-art medical hub.
Across Australia, growing demand for MRI and imaging facilities is accelerating the conversion of existing buildings into specialised healthcare environments. Slabtec’s expertise in CFRP-based strengthening enables these projects to proceed quickly and sustainably, without the need for major reconstruction.
The Challenge: Increasing Slab Capacity for Heavy Medical Equipment
MRI and CT equipment impose significant concentrated loads that exceed the design capacity of most existing retail or commercial slabs. The site team faced restricted access, a live carpark environment, and tight completion timeframes, all of which demanded a strengthening solution that was efficient, low-impact, and precise.
Slabtec’s CFRP & Steel Strengthening Solution
Leveraging its position as one of Australia’s leaders in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening, Slabtec designed and delivered a high-performance system comprising:
– 573 lineal metres of S1514 CFRP laminate
– FX-50 and steel plate installations for localised reinforcement
The solution increased both slab and beam capacity, enabling the safe installation of heavy MRI units while maintaining operational continuity on the live site.
Advantages of CFRP for Adaptive Reuse
- Lightweight and non-intrusive installation
- Rapid application with minimal noise and vibration
- High tensile strength and long-term durability
- Ideal for occupied or operational environments
- Enables reuse of existing structures, reducing embodied carbon
Design, Delivery & Outcomes
Through detailed structural assessment and design optimisation, Slabtec’s engineering team achieved:
- Structural upgrade completed on time
- Increased load capacity and structural resilience
- Minimal impact on ongoing operations
- Retention and reuse of existing structure – a major sustainability gain
Redefining What’s Possible in Adaptive Reuse
This MRI project demonstrates how CFRP strengthening is enabling a new generation of adaptive reuse projects — transforming underutilised assets into high-performance medical facilities.
Slabtec continues to set the benchmark in structural strengthening and CFRP innovation, delivering rapid, clean, and sustainable solutions for Australia’s evolving health infrastructure.
Slabtec’s Role in Adaptive Reuse Projects
At Slabtec, we specialise in helping clients extend the life of concrete structures through advanced repair, strengthening, and carbon fibre solutions. Adaptive reuse projects like this are a perfect fit for our expertise, helping to minimise waste while delivering safe, modern outcomes that support community growth.
Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening is commonly used to increase the flexural or shear capacity of concrete structures.
Over the last decade, Slabtec has become the market leader in the application of CFRP-strengthening solutions for many of Australia’s builders and developers.
Slabtec has delivered hundreds of successful CFRP-strengthening solutions for many of Australia’s builders and developers.
The Slabtec team is experienced in the full range of CFRP strengthening systems from Sika, S&P, and Master Builders.
We’re proud to be recognised as the industry leader in building strengthening.
