Perth CBD Carpark Strengthening Project
Our West Australian team successfully delivered a complex structural strengthening project for a carpark in Perth, demonstrating how advanced CFRP systems can restore capacity, address deterioration, and extend asset life—without demolition or major disruption.
Completed within a live operational environment, the project was delivered on time and on budget, despite challenging access conditions and tight installation controls.
Project Overview – Targeted Strengthening and Concrete Repair
The scope of works focused on strengthening deteriorated beams and addressing existing cracking prior to CFRP installation:
• 284 linear metres of S1514 CFRP laminate
• 263 linear metres of 600c CFRP wrap
• 150 linear metres of crack injection to remediate significant beam cracking
This integrated approach ensured structural defects were resolved before strengthening, delivering durable, long-term performance improvements.
Working Within a Live Carpark
The project presented several technical and logistical challenges that required careful planning and execution:
• 4.8 m wet-laid CFRP lengths installed to the underside of beams
• Multiple CFRP layers, limited to one layer per day to meet curing requirements
• EWP access required for all beams
• One beam located on a steep driveway requiring specialised EWP access
• Works staged to maintain safety and minimise disruption in an active carpark
Adaptive Reuse and Sustainable Renewal
Carparks are increasingly being repaired, repurposed, expanded vertically, or integrated into mixed-use developments. CFRP strengthening enables asset owners to pursue these opportunities by increasing structural capacity, preserving existing concrete elements, and significantly reducing embodied carbon compared with demolition and rebuild.
By combining forensic investigation, engineering precision, and advanced composite materials, Interspan helps clients extend service life and unlock long-term value from existing assets.
Outcome
- Extended structural service life
• Improved durability and performance
• Reduced embodied carbon and material use
• Project delivered on time and on budget
Slabtec’s Role in Adaptive Reuse Projects
At Slabtec, we specialise in helping clients extend the life of concrete structures through advanced repair, strengthening, and carbon fibre solutions. Adaptive reuse projects like this are a perfect fit for our expertise, helping to minimise waste while delivering safe, modern outcomes that support community growth.
Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening is commonly used to increase the flexural or shear capacity of concrete structures.
Over the last decade, Slabtec has become the market leader in the application of CFRP-strengthening solutions for many of Australia’s builders and developers.
Slabtec has delivered hundreds of successful CFRP-strengthening solutions for many of Australia’s builders and developers.
The Slabtec team is experienced in the full range of CFRP strengthening systems from Sika, S&P, and Master Builders.
We’re proud to be recognised as the industry leader in building strengthening.
