Slabtec Structural Strengthenin for St George Hospital

Post-Tension Pocket Repairs & Car Park Strengthening –  St George Hospital Carpark

Specialist repairs to deteriorated external PT pockets, delivered as part of a broader structural strengthening and remediation project.

The existing carpark required essential structural remediation to extend its design life and support the expanded hospital campus.

Constructed in the 1990s, the carpark required remediation to address deterioration and extend its service life. Slabtec was engaged by Brenic Constructions to deliver critical concrete and post-tension repair works to restore the structure’s durability and ensure continued service for hospital staff and visitors.

Slabtec’s Scope of Works

  • Post-Tension Pocket Edge Repairs – reinstating durability of deteriorated external PT pockets.
  • Concrete Repairs – restoring spalled and cracked surfaces across multiple areas.
  • Exposed PT Strand Remediation – cleaning, protecting, and re-covering corroded strands.
  • Crack Repairs – sealing cracks and reinstating structural continuity.

Post-Tension Pocket Edge Repairs

Slabtec repaired deteriorated external post-tensioning anchorage pockets at St George Hospital, removing unsound concrete to expose the anchorage assemblies, cleaning and treating exposed steel, and reinstating the pockets with repair mortar.

The works restored protective cover around these critical components, helping limit moisture ingress and further corrosion while improving the durability of the slab edges.

Project Challenges

Operating within an active hospital precinct demanded precise coordination, safe access, and adaptability.

  • Live Carpark Environment – Continuous hospital operations required uninterrupted vehicle and pedestrian access.
  • Substantial Volume of Small Repairs – Numerous small, localised defects required meticulous planning and consistent workmanship.
  • External Edge PT Pocket Repairs – Works along the carpark perimeter required Brenic Constructions to develop a scaffolding and bespoke access solution for safe external access.
  • Fully Exposed Weather Conditions – Repairs were completed in open-air conditions, requiring UV protection and moisture control measures to ensure long-term performance by Brenic Constructions and Slabtec.

Project Outcome

Despite the challenges of a live environment and variable weather conditions, Slabtec completed all works safely, on time, and to specification. The project successfully extended the design life of the car park, ensuring reliable infrastructure to support the hospital and the broader St George community.
