Structural Strengthening – Transforming an Industrial Building into a Sports Complex
The City of Sydney is responding to the needs of a growing inner-city population with a bold adaptive reuse project in Alexandria — transforming an old industrial building at 6–8 Huntley Street into a vibrant community sports complex. Kane Constructions NSW were appointed for the project with Patridge as Consulting Engineers
The new sporting centre, designed with accessibility and sustainability at its core, will feature:
Four indoor multipurpose courts for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics and badminton
Outdoor flexible courts for training and casual play
Seating for spectators, reception, kiosk, admin, and change room facilities
Fitness areas, a landscaped public space, and bike parking at the front
Environmentally, the project sets a high standard. The entire rooftop will be covered with solar panels, which will help power the facility. The building will also utilise natural lighting and ventilation where possible, and an on-site system will collect, store, and reuse rainwater, further reducing its environmental footprint.
The site is located just 1.3 km from Green Square and St Peters stations and is well-served by cycleways and public transport, making it a truly accessible community hub.
